WORKING PROCEDURES TO ADD INFORMATION

A) Get information on persons of interest

1. Open source object of your choice

Option 1: Take any source of interest with information on academic careers you have at hand.

Option 2: Open Kieler Professorenkatalog by Volbehr in Geovistory

Step 1: open card of source object “Volbehr, Professoren” & click on table

 

Step 2: open table & filter according to medicine

  • open table

  • add text break & adjust columns

  • filter for “Medizin”

  • select person of interest

Option 3: Open Online Kieler Gelehrtenverzeichnis

Step 1:

•Professorenkatalog «Volbehr/Weyl 1956 Online»:

•Kieler Gelehrtenverzeichnis:

Step 2:

  • filter for example for “Medizin”

or

→ select person of interest

 

B) Produce information in Geovistory

 

1. Add source reference if not existing

  • open “source section” & add the source type in question, for example websource.

 

  • Book: use «serially produced object»

    1. Exemple: Eigenmann, Philipp, Migration macht Schule. Bildungs- und Berufsqualifikation von und für Italienerinnen und Italiener in Zürich, 1960-1990, Zurich, 2017

  • Archival source: use “unique source object”

    1. Exemple: AAV Prefettura Casa Pont Udienze b38 1939

  • Websource

    1. Example: Webpage Wikipedia Otto Diels

 

2. Add new person if not existing

  • open “entity section” & add a person

  • fill in the name and check whether already existing

 

3. Add information about their life

  • open “person card”

  • activate the edit mode

  • select for example “birth”

  • fill in the information you have at hand

4. Add information on their academic education & career

  • open “person card”

  • activate the edit mode

 

4.1 academic titles

  • to add information on academic titles select “has obtained”

  • fill in information as below

4.2 study activities

  • select “carries out” and select “study”

  • fill in information as below as needed

    • academic discipline

    • time span

    • etc.

 

4.3 membership in an association/group

  • select “is member of” and add a “membership”

    • indicate the time period

    • indicate of which group this person was a member (you have to create the group as well)

    • you can indicate a type of membership if wished by clicking on “advanced form”. For this, you have to create the types in the vocabulary section

Define role/function in “association” attached to this membership

if you want to add precise information about the role
  • add all roles as “social roles”, eg. “President of the National Student Organisation of Switzerland”

if you want to add generic information about the role
  • add all roles as “social qualities”, eg. “President of an Association” in the vocabulary section

  •  

  • in both cases (generic or specific) you can then indicate in which quality a person had during its membership by selecting the corresponding social role or social quality

 

4.4 information about jobs and position that a person held (such as a professorship/academic chair)

if you want to add specific information about the job/position

  • add all roles as “social roles”, eg. “rector of the University of Kiel” or “Chair of Chemistry at the University of Kiel”

  • open the entity card of a person and activate edit mode

  • add for each person a “social role embodiment” (temporal) selecting “embodies”

if you want to add generic information about the job/position

  • add all jobs as “social qualities”, eg. “rector of a University” or “professor”

  • open the entity card of a person and activate edit mode

  • select “has social quality” and then “social quality of an actor (temporal)”

 

5. Add GND or other reference number

  • open person card

  • activate the edit mode

  • select “has identification”

  • select “concerns identifier”

C) Link information with Source

  • open person card

  • go to the right side panel and select “Annotations”

  • select “is mentioned in” & link it to the table or source reference of your choice

 

D) Visualize

  • open “analysis section”

  • select pre-configured visualisations such as “Geburtsorte” or “gegor. Promotions- Habilitationsorte”

  • click on “run” and explore
